Medically referred to as hypertension, the high blood pressure is a serious health condition which can result in kidney failure, stroke, and heart attack. Any blood pressure reading which is 140/90 mm Hg or above is considered to be high.Home Remedies for High Blood Pressure

Hypertension is usually diagnosed when a person has sustained high reading of both systolic and diastolic pressure over longer period of time.

One of the most common factors that contribute to high blood pressure are the following:

  • Obesity
  • Adrenal disease
  • Birth control pills
  • Pain relievers
  • Stress
  • Excessive drinking
  • Kidney disease
  • Lack of aerobic exercises
  • High salt intake
  • Genetic factors

Even though the usual treatment for hypertension is taking lowering blood pressure medications, you are recommended to try some of natural alternatives outlined below:

  1. Onion Juice

What makes onion juice able to lower blood pressure levels is the presence of antioxidant flavonol in its composition, known as quercetin.

Aim at eating one medium –sized raw onion a day. Another option is to mix ½ tsp of onion juice with ½ tsp of honey and to consume it twice daily for a week or two.

  1. Garlic

The blood sugar lowering effects of garlic have been proven by several studies. Both raw and cooked garlic are effective in lowering blood sugar levels as well as in regulating the cholesterol levels.  Garlic assists in relaxing the blood vessels by stimulating the production of hydrogen sulfide and nitric oxide.

It is recommended to consume 1-2 crushed garlic cloves a day, and you can crush them with your hands.  Crushing the garlic cloves creates hydrogen sulfide, compound which is known to reduce the pressure on the heart, support good blood flow, and removes gas. In case you don’t like to consume the garlic raw or you are unable to do so because it causes a burning sensation, feel free to mix it with a cup of milk.

Another option is to mix 6 drops of garlic juice with 4 tbsp of water and consume twice daily.

  1. Honey

Due to the calming effect it has on blood vessels, honey is able to reduce the pressure on the heart, which in turn lowers the blood pressure levels too.

It is recommended to take 2 tsp of honey every morning on an empty stomach.  You can also mix 1 tsp of honey and 1 tsp of ginger juice with 2 tsp of cumin seed powder. Take two times daily.

Yet another variant is to mix honey and basil juice in equal ratios and to consume on daily basis in the morning, before eating or drinking anything else.

  1. Lemons

Lemons keep blood vessels soft and pliable and the high blood pressure is reduced by the removal of any rigidity. Moreover, the vitamin C content in lemons makes them your best ally in preventing a heart failure. Vitamin C is also known to neutralize the damage and harmful effects caused by free radicals in the body.

Mix cup of warm water with the juice from half a lemon.  For optimal results, don’t add any salt or sugar. Consume this mixture every morning on an empty stomach.

  1. Celery

Due to the high levels of phytochemical 3- N butylphthalide, celery is very effective in lowering blood pressure levels. Pthalides are chemicals that relax the muscles in and around the arterial walls, which in turn allows the blood to flow easily and without any difficulty.

In addition, celery reduces the stress hormones which are often reason for the constriction of blood vessels. So, this is another way in which celery contributes to keeping blood pressure in check.

Eat one stalk of celery with a glass of water on daily basis. You can also munch on celery during the day.

  1. Watermelon Seeds

The compound known as cucurbocitrin found in watermelon seeds is found to widen blood capillaries.  It improves the kidney function at the same time. Consequently, this compound contributes to reduction in blood pressure levels and it is effective in treating arthritis as well.

According to a 2010 Florida State pilot study, watermelon is able to reduce blood pressure levels due to its vasodilatory effect.

In order to make a homemade remedy for reducing blood pressure levels, grind equal quantities of watermelon seeds and poppy seeds.  Take 1 tsp of the mixture in the morning and 1 tsp in the evening.

Another option is to put 2 tsp of gently crushed, dried watermelon seeds in a mug and to pour boiling water over them. Let it steep for an hour and strain the liquid afterwards. Take 4 tbsp of the remedy on regular intervals during the day.

  1. Coconut Water

Keeping your body properly hydrated is crucial when it comes to blood pressure levels.  Make sure you drink 8-10 glasses of water daily. Coconut water is another great idea, as it is very effective in lowering blood pressure levels and keeping them in check.

According to a study conducted in 2005 and published by the West Indian Medical Journal, coconut water is extremely effective in reducing systolic blood pressure, due to its high levels of potassium, vitamin C, and magnesium.  Apart from drinking coconut water, you can also use coconut oil in culinary purposes.

  1. Bananas

Bananas are the perfect fruit for people having hypertension because it helps them keep their blood pressure levels under control.  They are abundant in potassium, mineral that lessens the effects of sodium.

Make sure you consume 1-2 bananas on daily basis.  Moreover, try to consume more orange juice, sweet baked potatoes, spinach, currants, dried apricots, cantaloupe, dried raisins, winter squash, and zucchini.

  1. Cayenne Pepper

Individuals suffering from mild hypertension can benefit a lot from the consumption of cayenne pepper.  This ingredient supports proper and smooth blood flow by preventing platelets from clumping together and accumulating in the blood.

Cayenne pepper is quite tasty and you need to use only small quantities. It can be added in both fruit and vegetable salads as well as in soups.
