The fruit labels you see on the produce you buy aren’t just a simple bar code. These stickers are called a PLU code and actually show if the fruit you bought is organic or a GMO product. If you know how to read them properly, you will always end up with the right piece of fruit.

The stickers on your produce contain certain codes which indicate if they’ve been treated with pesticides or herbicides and if they’re of the highest quality. If the code begins with the number 8 and has 5 digits, the produce is a GMO product. If the code has 4 digits, it has been produced traditionally with the use of pesticides, while fruits and vegetables with 5-digit code that starts with 9 are grown completely organically and are safest to consume.

According to the Environmental Working Group, produce sprayed with pesticides can cause congenital defects if you consume them frequently. These fruits have also been related to nerve damage and cancer, which is why they should be avoided. It goes without mention that we should never give them to our children, as their bodies are still not fully developed. Here’s a list which will allow you to learn what fruits and vegetables you should avoid, and what are safe to be consumed:

Fruit and veggies sprayed with pesticides

Carrots

Apples

Grapes

Nectarines

Blueberries

Raspberries

Strawberries

Tomatoes

Peaches

Spinach

Cherries

Oranges

Pears

Cucumbers

Fruits and veggies safe to consume

Grapefruit

Asparagus

Eggplant

Broccoli

Papaya

Avocado

Onions

Mango

Kiwi

Cabbage

Sweet potatoes

Sweet corn

Frozen peas

Pineapple

Honeydew melon

Statistical data from the EWG showed that there’s at least one pesticide on 99% of apples, 98% of peaches and 97% of nectarines, so it’s best to stay away from them. However, the highest amount of pesticides has been found in white potatoes, which is why it’s best to stick to sweet potatoes instead.
